American Trains

American Trains

Trains — repetition, movement, color — this is not simply a story of the railroad, but a journey, a slow continuous process on thick, textured paper, of the movement of diesel locomotives running repetitive sequences along the horizon. This is a journey consisting of framed watercolors, yet never a true rendering, rather a sophisticated, deliberate, and essential search.

You do not have to love locomotives to appreciate the work of Renzo Foletto, instead attention should be given to the careful reflection and observation of the compositional qualities of the drawings. Concern for each of the particular elements complete the work through the entire composition — the details, the arrangement on the page, even the frame. Foletto’s artwork must therefore be seen in this perspective, as a whole.

Renzo Foletto was born in 1949 in the town of Lonigo, Vicenza, in the North East of Italy. At age nine he moved to Turin where he later graduated from the Primo Liceo Artistico, high school. In 1974 Foletto received his degree in architecture at the Turin Polytechnic. Since 1976 he has been a practicing architect in Turin where he maintains his offices at Via Pomba 14 bis.
